"Heteretopia2002" is an interdisciplinary group founded by architects, an art historian-sociologist and a designer who work on visual codes of everyday city life in the context of social and artistic realm.

The group named itself after Michel Foucault's concept of "heterotopia". In his article "of Other Spaces" Foucault defines the concept of heteretopia as "the coexistence in an impossible space of a large number of fragmentary possible worlds". Istanbul is a global developing city where a lot of ethnic groups, exiting varieties and unorganized urban structure reside. Therefore this city is an excellent resource for exploring the concept. Through this exploration we focused on some parts of the city working with the locals from different backgrounds themselves. As a group coming from diverse disciplines strengthens the creative outcome and the argument that has been developed in site specific excursions. In each project the architectural, sociological and artistic methods and tools that include graphic design, collages, structures, installations, video recording, digital photography and interviews.
